Arrowhead was a curious young male seal, first recorded by SRT in 2019, who visited Looe Island every summer.

Cornwall Seal Group is an evidence based conservation charity working to protect our globally rare species, the Atlantic grey seal. In doing so, we can protect our precious ocean ecosystems for wildlife and for future generations.

  • Spectacular people

  • Our volunteer citizen scientists routinely survey their local patch monitoring and identifying seals from their unique fur patterns as well as the issues that affect this globally rare species. The more people learn about seals, the more they want to become actively involved to help them, and our volunteers undertake a huge range of activities from surveying, to data analysis and public engagement, becoming the best ambassadors for seals and the marine environment.

  • The data collected from our amazing volunteers is processed and analysed to build up the life stories of our individual seals. We are able to track seal movements, behaviours and observe the characters of each individual seal!

  • Learning through Research

  • Rangers collate and write up the evidence collected from our amazing citizen scientists. This research is not limited to seal movements, but we also look at the wider marine environment and human impacts including marine litter, disturbance and post release monitoring.

  • Conservation: Making a Difference

  • Our research reports are used to inform policy, planning and public consultations. Evidence is shared with our partner groups, regionally, nationally and internationally to give seals a voice in a world where money talks loudest.

  • Working together

  • We work with local marine groups, non-governmental organisations, charities, statutory agencies, as well as partnering with four international organisations (World Animal Protection, the Global Ghost Gear Initiative, Pinniped Entanglement group and 5 Gyres Trawlshare). Together we are stronger with a more powerful voice, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

When discovering individual seal stories people are amazed at the mobility, resilience and characters of individual seals and the species as a whole. People become motivated to take everyday actions to help protect our precious marine environment upon which our existence depends.
